Di¡erences in distractor-induced deviation between horizontal and vertical saccade trajectories

چکیده
Thepresent study systematically investigated the in£uence of a distractor on horizontal and vertical eyemovements. Results showed that both horizontal and vertical eye movements deviated away from the distractor but these deviationswere stronger for vertical than for horizontal movements. As trajectory deviations away from a distractor are generally attributed to inhibition applied to the distractor, this suggests that this deviation is not only due to di¡erences in activity between the two collicular motor maps, but can also be evoked by local application of inhibitory processes in the same map as the target. Nonetheless, deviations were more dominant for vertical movements which suggests that for these movements more inhibition is applied than for horizontal movements. متن کاملThe time course of vertical, horizontal and oblique saccade trajectories: Evidence for greater distractor interference during vertical saccades
The present study aimed to characterize the effect of a nearby distractor on vertical, horizontal, and oblique saccade curvature under normal saccade preparation times. Consistent with previous findings, longer-latency vertical saccades showed greater curvature away from a distractor than did oblique or horizontal saccades. At short latencies, vertical saccades also showed greater curvature tow...
متن کاملThe control of saccade trajectories: direction of curvature depends on prior knowledge of target location and saccade latency.
Recent reports have shown that saccades can deviate either toward or away from distractors. However, the specific conditions responsible for the change in initial saccade direction are not known. One possibility, examined here, is that the direction of curvature (toward or away from distractors) reflects preparatory tuning of the oculomotor system when the location of the target and distractor ...
متن کاملThe spatial and temporal shape of oculomotor inhibition
Selecting a stimulus as the target for a goal-directed movement involves inhibiting other competing possible responses. Inhibition has generally proved hard to study behaviorally, because it results in no measurable output. The effect of distractors on the shape of oculomotor and manual trajectories provide evidence of such inhibition. Individual saccades may deviate initially either towards, o...

Selecting a stimulus as the target for a goal-directed movement involves inhibiting other competing possible responses. Both target and distractor stimuli activate populations of neurons in topographic oculomotor maps such as the superior colliculus. Local inhibitory interconnections between these populations ensure only one saccade target is selected. Suppressing saccades to distractors may ad...
